Choose a torque wrench for the bolts you will tighten

The expensive torque wrench may be excellent for jobs your bike does not need. Start with the actual torque values in your component instructions. Then buy a tool that covers those values correctly and reaches the fasteners.

A helmeted red panda holds a small torque wrench at the handlebar clamp of a supported green bicycle in a workshop.

Make the torque list first

For a GRARO build, list cockpit, seatpost, brake mounting, axles and drivetrain fastening separately. Write source document, specified value, direction, bit and any tightening sequence. Do not turn one printed cockpit number into a universal bicycle torque.

Check the tool’s rated use

The required value must be inside the tool’s specified usable range. Check whether the tool measures in the needed direction; a reversible ratchet does not necessarily mean calibrated torque measurement in both directions. Confirm suitable bits and access. Adapters can affect leverage and readings, so follow the tool maker’s instructions rather than adding a long improvised extension.

Park Tool lists the TW-5.2 at 2–14 Nm and TW-6.2 at 10–60 Nm. Suppose the instructions on your list required 5 Nm and 40 Nm: the first tool covers 5 Nm, the second 40 Nm, and neither covers both. These are hypothetical requirements, not GRARO tightening values. Direction is another filter: the ATD-1.2 sets torque clockwise only.

Park Tool’s torque-wrench use-and-care guide illustrates that different tools cover different tasks. Read the exact model’s instructions for operation, storage and calibration. A single tool may not cover both delicate cockpit work and higher-torque drivetrain jobs.

Treat torque as part of assembly

A correct number cannot repair wrong hardware, damaged threads or a mismatched joint. Prepare and install the parts as specified before tightening. If you cannot identify the instructions or operate the tool confidently, have the workshop do that job and demonstrate it. For a one-time build, paying for the difficult work can be better value than buying tools you will use once.

Keep that fastener list beside the carbon assembly paste notes; the specified surface and thread preparation belong with each torque value.
