Chinese gravel frames for 2026: GRARO, G21 or CFR696?

Start with the ICAN GRARO if its documented tyre envelope suits your rides, the YOELEO Altera G21 if you need more tyre room, and the Carbonda CFR696 if you are comfortable resolving the exact factory specification before ordering. Then eliminate any option that fails your fit, tyre or complete-quote checks. These are established platforms to consider in 2026, not a claim that all three were launched this year or a ranking from a ride test.

Three starting points, three quotes to resolve

The table deliberately retains the original price dates and bases. Two converted global-store figures and a factory reference range are not three comparable delivered offers. None buys a complete bike. Use them to choose which seller to approach, then replace them with like-for-like written quotes.

Start with the three-frame comparison, not a universal winner. A cheaper frame stops being the cheaper project when it needs different wheels, a new cockpit or extra workshop work.

GRARO: start with the tyre you will actually use

ICAN's current product page lists a 700×45 mm maximum, T47 bottom bracket and UDH hanger. That makes GRARO a useful starting point when your chosen tyre and riding conditions fit that envelope. A reviewer's wider fitted tyre does not increase the manufacturer's limit.

Read the exact drivetrain and chainring restrictions before buying parts. UDH identifies a hanger interface; it does not, on its own, approve every transmission. If your plan already requires tyres wider than the published maximum, move on instead of budgeting for an experiment.

G21: make the extra room useful

The Altera G21 record has a broader documented tyre envelope: YOELEO lists 700×53 mm or 650B×2.1 inches for a single-chainring setup. The larger figures are useful only if your planned drivetrain supports that setup. They do not promise the same clearance with mudguards; rim width, actual mounted width and the approved combination still matter.

The workshop build below shows how much of the final bike is still a choice: drivetrain, wheels, bar, stem and contact points. Ask which cockpit and seatpost the offered package includes. Do not carry one customer's convenient two-piece setup across to a different bundle without checking.

CFR696: buy the drawing, not the accumulated reputation

The CFR696 has years of build reports, but a model name alone does not identify the offered revision. Our manufacturer record dated 1 September 2026 lists BSA-68 and UDH. Treat those as a documented starting point, then ask the seller to confirm the drawing and interfaces for your actual order.

Ask Carbonda to identify the exact frame and fork drawing, hanger, axle hardware, paint and included parts on the quote. Recorded rack and fender compatibility does not supply a carrying limit. Confirm the intended load and location rather than borrowing a figure from another bike.

A cheaper frame can produce a dearer bike

Use one parts list for all three quotes. Include the frame package, missing cockpit parts, bottom bracket, drivetrain, wheels, tyres, rotors, saddle, pedals, assembly and delivery. For an import, add the destination's actual mandatory charges rather than a guessed flat percentage.

For illustration, a frame that is £150 cheaper but needs £220 more in delivery and £60 more in compatible finishing parts makes the otherwise identical project £130 dearer: −150 + 220 + 60. Those are hypothetical differences, not offers for these models. An unknown charge remains unknown, not zero. The frameset cost guide explains how to complete the budget.

Let the first failed condition make the choice

Write down your required contact-point position, actual tyre setup and complete delivered budget. Cross out a frame when the documented size cannot support the planned position, the approved tyre envelope cannot do the ride, or the seller cannot resolve a material item in the quote. Do not average those failures into a good-looking specification score.

If all three survive, choose between the actual seller, service route and complete configuration you can verify. Open the geometry comparison for recorded dimensions, then send one exact build brief. The useful shortlist is the one that ends in an answerable order, not a longer list of carbon names.
