Choose gravel tread for the difficult kilometre

A route can be 90% paved and still contain a steep, loose kilometre that decides the tyre choice. Count the kilometres, but also ask where losing traction would matter. The small difficult section may deserve more attention than the long easy one.

Mark three moments on the route

Identify the loosest climb, the corner where the surface is least predictable, and the longest paved section. Note dry or wet conditions. This gives the tyre a real job description. A tyre chosen for a dry summer loop may be a poor match for the same route after rain.

Look beyond the centre strip

Compare centre tread, shoulder knobs, casing and compound for the intended conditions. Schwalbe’s gravel range illustrates distinct road-leaning, mixed-terrain and mud-oriented uses. Those are manufacturer intentions, not our measured grip ranking. A smooth centre with shoulder knobs is not the same tyre as a full slick, nor does a large knob guarantee wet-pavement grip.

For a concrete contrast, Schwalbe describes G-One RS as a semi-slick for hard surfaces and G-One RX for rocky or muddy terrain. On a mostly paved route with an unavoidable muddy climb, those descriptions point to different compromises. Decide whether you need to ride that climb, can walk it, or can reroute before choosing; the paved percentage alone cannot answer that question.

Clearance sets the available choices

The GRARO and LCG071S-PRO have different documented tyre envelopes. Use the exact frame’s requirements with the measured tyre, including knobs and mud clearance, rather than choosing a tyre from another owner’s photograph. Width cannot be separated from rim approval.

Write down the compromise

Finish the shortlist with one sentence: “I accept this paved-road compromise because this difficult section matters.” If no suitable tyre fits, change the route or frame choice rather than expecting technique to cancel every equipment limit. Start cautiously on unfamiliar surfaces; the tyre label does not know the next corner.

Use the measured tyre-width guide for the clearance check and the hooked-versus-hookless guide for wheel/tyre approval.
