Flying with electronic shifting: a battery packing plan

The bike can be beautifully packed while its tiny shifting battery creates trouble at check-in. Make a separate battery list before closing the case. This guide concerns electronic shifting, not an e-bike’s much larger drive battery.

Inventory the system you actually own

List the battery model, whether it is installed or spare, its marked energy rating, and the correct charger. Include lever coin cells and any power bank. For a Twitter V3 EDS, use the instructions for the fitted WheelTop components. SRAM’s removable-battery procedure is not automatically a WheelTop or Shimano procedure.

Ask the airline about each leg

The FAA’s US passenger guidance, checked October 4, 2026, requires spare lithium batteries in carry-on baggage, protected against damage and short circuit. Installed lithium-powered devices have additional conditions. Airlines and other jurisdictions may be stricter. Check the actual carriers, including connections, with your battery details rather than assuming a small battery is exempt.

One packing mistake is to call the bike’s only battery “installed” after removing it. In the FAA’s lithium-battery guidance, spare means uninstalled, not merely an extra battery. Once removed according to its own system’s instructions, an allowed lithium battery belongs protected in your carry-on, not inside the checked bike case. If that cabin bag is checked at the gate, take the spare batteries out and keep them with you in the cabin. The battery’s chemistry, rating, condition and the carrier’s limits still need checking.

Pack now; check function after arrival

For applicable Road AXS equipment, SRAM’s travel video demonstrates battery removal and protective blocks/covers. Follow your own system’s transport instructions without forcing connectors or opening a frame battery compartment unnecessarily. Keep allowed spare batteries accessible in your cabin bag and bring the correct charging lead.

For the broader ownership choice, compare the charging and maintenance routines of mechanical and electronic shifting.

  • Save the airline response and component instructions offline.
  • After assembly, check shifting and brakes before the first ride; transport can disturb more than the battery.
